A native of Traverse City, Michigan, Matt Joppich has studied with several respected craftspeople including James Krenov. Matt allows the
beauty of the wood to harmonize with the design. He feels a deep obligation to give trees an honorable second life through his furniture.
The wood is selected from across the country for its beauty and character. Every piece is custom designed for the client, crafted using
traditional joinery and hand finished. He has a commitment to reduce waste and utilizes most wood from the construction process for making
display quality cutting and serving boards. Matt enjoys sailing, biking, skiing and the great outdoors when he's not in the shop making furniture.*
His apprenticeship with a local Windsor chair and furniture maker, combined with studying in northern California has given Matt a wide
knowledge of styles. His personal style tends toward simplistic designs. These highlight the natural beauty of the wood and invite a closer look
to enjoy the subtle details. These designs include tables, chairs,
desks, dressers, display cabinets, entertainment centers, chests, built-in cabinetry and more. Matt is excellent at working with the
client to design a custom piece for that special place in a home or
business.
Matt personally selects wood from across the country and prides himself
in finding some of the finest available. He uses only wood harvested from sustainable growth forests or salvaged trees **for the health of
the environment**. Most of the pieces are made from domestic woods with some exotic woods for details. Some included are American Black Cherry,
Big Leaf Maple, Claro Walnut, Elm, Ash, White Oak, Mahogany, Macassar Ebony and Rosewood, many of which have been chosen for their incredible
color and figure.
Each piece is carefully handcrafted using traditional wood joints including mortise and tenons, dovetails, butterflies and bridle joints.
Natural wood movement is also planned to maximize long-term integrity. Finally the piece is hand finished with polymerized tung oil or shellac
that is chosen for beauty, durability and longevity.*
